Information about DVD regions

Not all DVDs will play on all DVD players!

The publishing companies negotiate releases in each country around the world, and ensure that each DVD will only play on players sold in those countries by adding a Region Code to the data on the DVD.

One of these logos will be on the rear of the DVD box

Unmodified DVD players bought in each region will only play their own region's discs. The USA is in Region 1, and Europe is in Region 2 . Region 0 is a region-free option and these discs are intended to play on any player around the world.

In the early days of DVD releases, the USA had an enormous range of films on the market whereas Europe had very few available which were more expensive. This led to "region hacking" where a European region 2 machine would be modified to be able to play discs from other regions, usually region 1, and travellers would buy up DVDs on their visits to the USA.
Nowadays there is no longer such a difference between what's available in the USA and Europe, and prices have equalised so that multi-region DVD players are no longer in such great demand.

If you bought your DVD player in Europe, it will play all the DVDs we sell as they are Region 2.
If you buy any DVDs in the USA or outside the region they may not play on your player unless you modify it.

To add a further complication, the USA television standard is NTSC (29.97 frames per second and 525 lines), and the European standard is PAL (25 frames per second and 625 lines).
This is nothing to do with region encoding and discs from each region could be in either TV standard. Most modern TVs and players sold in Europe will cope with NTSC as well as the native PAL standard.
